Ketamine was originally developed as a anesthetic, which was used in controlled doses on patients at the doctor’s discretion. When used in low doses, there are few side effects. However, the drug was picked up largely by the hippie culture in the mid-20th century. It became popular because ketamine had hallucinogenic qualities when taken in larger doses. Although not as widely known as other recreational drugs, ketamine is still found in nightclubs. It has developed a reputation as a date rape drug due to being relatively odorless and tasteless when mixed with drinks.
